Clean Cars Campaign Petition
The Santa Clara County Medical Association has endorsed the California Clean Cars Campaign, a critical public health regulation that will dramatically reduce air pollution from vehicles over the next two decades. As the California Air Resources Board drafts regulations over the next two months, the American Lung Association in California is urging medical and health professionals to sign on to a petition urging the strongest possible regulations. The goal is to have 300 health and medical professionals signed on by Sept. 30. Please help us reach our goal.
A recent article in Southern California Physician magazine highlights the role of medical and health professionals in pushing for stronger controls on vehicle emissions: Urgent Care: Medical Support for Clean Air. The article also cites the American Lung Association in California report, Road to Clean Air that found that by setting the strongest possible clean car standards to reduce emissions, California could avoid over $7 billion in annual health and other societal costs, while also avoiding 400 premature deaths, over 8,000 asthma attacks, and over 36,000 lost school and work days each year.
Passenger vehicles are a leading source of pollution in California. The American Lung Association 2011 State of the Air report reminds us that 90 percent of Californians are breathing too many days of unhealthy air. California’s clean cars program will create the next generation of low polluting vehicles to make our state a global leader in clean car technology and protect public health.
