Healthy Air Campaign Update

Late last year, the American Lung Association (ALA) launched the Healthy Air Campaign, a collaboration of leading national and state-based health and medical organizations fighting to preserve the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) authority to implement and enforce the Clean Air Act. Many members of the health care community have signed on to the letters. Today, the ALA has some exciting news about a new creative approach, which includes a provocative, new national advertisement.

On Friday, July 29, the ALA will debut a new television ad targeting those who are advancing an agenda to weaken the Clean Air Act. This ad is just one part of an overarching creative strategy using a red baby carriage and the sounds of a coughing and wheezing child suffering from breathing difficulties, in order to draw attention to the most vulnerable victims of air pollution.

The new ad will run for eight days starting Friday, July 29 on Washington, D.C. cable and national cable news shows on networks such as CNN, FoxNews and MSNBC. The ad will also run on July 31, during the Sunday political news shows in the D.C. market only.

The ad is phase one of a three-phase strategy using the “red carriage” theme. During the next few weeks, the red carriage image will be integrated with grassroots mobilization, earned media and direct advocacy to make an impact on Members of Congress, key staff and political elites.

This new ad and creative approach comes at a time when the Clean Air Act is under attack unlike any other time its 40-year history. Big corporate polluters and their allies in Congress are working to undermine the Act’s health and science underpinnings, are trying to repeal standards already on the books, and are using every method possible to delay the EPA’s efforts to update pollution standards designed to prevent the public from getting sick or dying.

Thank you so much for your support to defend the Clean Air Act. Your voices are more important than ever.
